From live, publicly broadcast police, fire and EMS radio traffic in Lubbock. Anyone with a scanner can hear the same audio. We record each transmission, transcribe it automatically, and group the transmissions into incidents. The audio player on each incident is the actual radio traffic.
No. We are not affiliated with any government agency, and nothing here is an official record. First radio reports are often wrong: addresses get corrected, a "structure fire" turns out to be burnt toast, a suspect description changes. Treat everything here as preliminary.
Two reasons. First, we intentionally blur exact home addresses to the block or nearest intersection out of respect for the people involved. Second, addresses are transcribed from radio audio by a computer, and scanner audio is scratchy; sometimes the street heard is not quite the street said. The map pin should be treated as "about here", not "this front door".
Fire apparatus are named by type and station: Engine 12 is the pumper from Station 12, Ladder 1 is an aerial truck, and Medic or EMS units are ambulances. Police callsigns combine a beat or shift number with a phonetic letter, so 2-Adam-14 is a patrol unit assigned to a particular area. DPS is the Texas Department of Public Safety, whose troopers work highways in and around the city.
Incidents close automatically after a few hours without new radio traffic, and we remove entries that turn out to have been misheard. If a serious-sounding entry vanished, that is usually why: later traffic showed the first transmission was garbled or the call was cleared as unfounded.
We only know what goes out over the channels we monitor. Calls handled by phone, on encrypted or unmonitored channels, or too garbled to transcribe never make it in. Quiet single-unit calls also sometimes produce too little radio traffic to register.
On purpose. Medical emergencies are private. We log that a medical call happened in an area so the map reflects reality, but we do not post medical details or push those calls to social media.
