Information we collect

The site does not require an account and does not collect names, email addresses or other personal information from visitors. Like most websites, our hosting provider records standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested) for security and troubleshooting. These logs are not used to identify or profile visitors and are not shared.

To understand how the site is used, it records each page view with the page requested, the referring site, the time, and a short-lived anonymous identifier derived from your IP address and browser (it changes every day and cannot be reversed into your IP). No cookies or tracking pixels are used, and this data is never shared or sold.

The site also uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies and collects usage data (pages viewed, approximate location, device and browser type) to help us understand traffic. Google's handling of this data is described in the Google Privacy Policy. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

The site stores a small number of preferences in your browser's local storage: display settings (theme, map type), your saved location if you set one, starred traffic cameras, and your reactions. Display settings and starred cameras never leave your device.

Alerts, location and reactions

If you turn on push alerts, your browser gives us a notification address (issued by your browser vendor, such as Google or Apple) plus the alert preferences you choose. If you have saved a location, a rounded version accurate to roughly half a mile is stored with that subscription so alerts, morning briefings and weather warnings can be matched to your area. Incidents you follow are stored with the subscription until they close. Turning alerts off deletes the subscription, its location and its follows.

Reactions are recorded with a random identifier generated by your browser and a short-lived anonymous hash used only to limit abuse. They are not linked to your name, account or location. Severe weather information comes from the National Weather Service.

Advertising

We may display advertising served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies at www.aboutads.info.
